Discovering the Beauty of Uniondale in Western Cape

Uniondale is located adjacent to the Langkloof, which meanders through the foothills of the Tsitsikamma Mountain range and is renowned for its scenic drives. Uniondale was created in 1856 when Hopedale and Lyon merged into one municipality. Once renowned for its wagon manufacturing and ostrich feather industries, Uniondale is now a quaint agricultural community where sheep, goats, seeds, and apples are the primary products.

Its aloe factory, which produces aloe crystal, gel, and health beverages, and its six Anglo-Boer War forts, one of which has been restored to its original condition and is well worth a visit, are just a few of the attractions that keep visitors occupied. Then there is Uniondale's Watermill, a lovingly restored 1854 structure with the largest wheel in South Africa that now contains an art gallery and a superb restaurant, as well as the Jewish Synagogue with its distinctive murals.

The region surrounding Uniondale offers some of the most picturesque journeys. All four dirt roadways that comprise the Prince Alfred, Homtini, Montagu, and Phantom passes are breathtakingly beautiful. The Langkloof to Kareedouw Drive is a paved alternative that winds along the foot of the Tsitsikamma Mountains. The Langkloof contains a fruit route that passes by several fruit plantations and packing sheds.

Possibly the most compelling reason to linger in Uniondale is to organize your departure: The N 9 will take you via Graaff-Reinet to Nieu-Bethesda and the unique Owl House; Prince Alfred's Pass will take you to Plettenberg Bay and Knysna on the Garden Route; and if you're still not satisfied, the R 62 will take you to Port Elizabeth.
